Fetal Origin of the Posterior Cerebral Artery

Right internal carotid arteriogram in the lateral projection. Note the large branch extending posteriorly (arrows). This is a fetal origin of the posterior cerebral artery. Compare this image with the "normal" image below.
The posterior cerebral artery arises from the internal carotid artery in 20% of people (10% on each side) and bilaterally in 7%.
